Every year, one of the big national pest companies publishes a list of the 50 worst U.S. cities for bed bugs. Chicago has held the top spot for a long time. Detroit sits near the top. Grand Rapids and Flint have been regulars. And then there’s Lansing, which keeps inching its way up the list like a kid sneaking extra cookies.
Not a trophy anyone wants on the shelf, right?
Still, the numbers don’t lie, and the folks on our trucks see the proof every week in East Lansing apartments, Holt duplexes, Okemos rentals, and plenty of houses on both sides of the Grand River. Bed bugs are having a moment in mid-Michigan. Here’s what that means for you, what to look for, and what happens when you finally decide you’ve had enough.
Why Is Lansing Climbing the Bed Bug Charts?
Blame the hitchhikers. Bed bugs don’t fly, don’t jump, and honestly aren’t great travelers on their own. They ride along in luggage, secondhand couches, backpacks, and gym bags. Lansing happens to be a city built for exactly that kind of traffic.
Think about it. A major university brings thousands of students in and out every semester, often with furniture that’s been through three previous owners. That constant turnover creates ideal conditions for bed bug infestations in college housing. The Capitol pulls in daily commuters and overnight visitors. Hotels along I-96 and US-127 turn over rooms constantly. Add rising rental turnover across Ingham County and you’ve got a city that basically mails bed bugs an invitation.
Weather doesn’t help either. Our winters push people indoors, closer together, with the heat cranked up. Bed bugs love a warm bedroom in January just as much as you do.
The Sneaky Signs You’ve Got Company
Here’s the frustrating part about bed bug pest control: most people wait too long because the early signs are easy to miss. A few itchy welts get blamed on mosquitoes. A rust-colored dot on the sheet gets blamed on a scratched ankle. Knowing the differences between common insect bites can help you recognize a potential infestation before it spreads.
Want to know what we look for on an inspection?
- Tiny dark specks (that’s bed bug droppings) along mattress seams, headboard joints, and the screw holes of bed frames, plus pale shed skins and a faint sweet, musty smell in rooms with a heavy infestation
- Bites that show up in lines or clusters, typically on arms, shoulders, and legs, and usually noticed in the morning
Catch any of that and you’re not overreacting by picking up the phone. Early infestations are faster and cheaper to knock out than the ones that have had six months to spread into the couch, the recliner, and the guest room.
Can’t I Just Handle This Myself?
You can try. Lots of our Lansing customers did before calling us, and almost all of them say the same thing: the spray from the hardware store made the bugs scatter, not disappear.
Bed bugs are resistant to many over-the-counter products. Worse, those products can push them deeper into walls and outlets, which drags the whole ordeal out longer. Steam, dryer heat, and mattress encasements have their place, and we’ll gladly coach you on all of it. Genuine pest extermination for bed bugs, though, takes equipment and products the average homeowner simply can’t buy.
What Happens When You Call Patriot
Fair question, since nobody wants a mystery process. The first conversation is a quick rundown of what you’re seeing, where you’re seeing it, and how long it’s been going on. From there, one of our technicians schedules an inspection, and yes, they check more than the mattress. Nightstands, baseboards, picture frames, box springs, the works.
Next comes a treatment plan built around your home, not a generic checklist. Some situations call for a heat approach. Others respond best to targeted applications in cracks, voids, and furniture joints. Many need a combination, plus a follow-up visit a couple weeks later because bed bug eggs are stubborn little things.
You’ll get a prep list ahead of time. Nothing crazy. Bag up loose linens, clear the floor, pull the bed away from the wall. Our technicians walk you through every item so there are no surprises on treatment day.
One Pest Rarely Travels Alone in Mid-Michigan
Funny thing about bed bug calls: once we’re in the home, we tend to spot other problems too. Mice slipping in under the garage door as the weather turns. Cockroaches behind the fridge in an older Lansing rental. A yellow jacket nest in the soffit that’s been buzzing since August.
Our team handles mice pest control, cockroach pest control, yellow jacket pest control, and general pest extermination across Lansing, Jackson, and Battle Creek, so a single visit can cover a lot of ground. Ask your technician to look around while they’re there. It’s included in the conversation, no pressure attached.

The ranking will do whatever it does next year. Your house doesn’t have to be part of the data.
